GENERAL

Do I need to fill in a waiver?

Yes, all participants or participants’ parent or legal guardian (if under the age of 18) must complete a waiver prior to taking part in a Skate Now lesson, clinic or party. Head to our WAIVER PAGE to complete one now.

Do I need to wear protective gear for a Skate Now lesson?

Yes, you do! Helmets and wrist guards are mandatory for all participants, regardless of age, experience, or ability level. We highly recommend that you also wear knee and elbow protection. Even experienced riders tend to push themselves during lessons, and we want all participants to stay safe while getting the most out of their riding!

Skate Now is committed to provide a safe learning environment for all.

Does Skate Now provide boards and protective equipment?

Yes, we do! If you need equipment for your private or group lesson, simply check the relevant boxes when making your booking. We can then provide the selected equipment for your lesson free of charge. However, please note that due to current health concerns, we encourage students to use their own gear if possible. This also allows students to practice between lessons. In addition, we also offer a great range of quality boards, protective gear, and accessories on our ONLINE SHOP.

Boards and protective gear are also provided for parties, holiday clinics, and school/OOSH programs.

Please avoid wearing Crocs, sandals, Uggs, thongs or high heels. We recommend bringing a drink and wearing sunscreen for outdoor lessons. How do 8-packs work?

8-packs are a way of purchasing multiple private lessons at a discount, with the option of using Active Kids vouchers for a further discount ($50). We also offer great rates for additional participant 8-packs.

To purchase an 8-pack, head to our BOOKING PAGE and select ‘8-Pack Private Lessons’ from the scheduler menu. Once you’ve purchased your 8-pack, you can then schedule lessons by selecting ‘Private Lessons’ from the menu. 8-pack lessons don’t need to be run over consecutive weeks, and can be scheduled as needed up to 365 days from the date of purchase.

Note: We don’t offer make-up lessons to multi participant 8-pack absentees.

What happens if it rains?

Private lessons need to be rescheduled with wet or extreme weather (unless it’s just a light sprinkle passing over). A decision on whether to cancel due to wet weather are made by Skate Now on the day of a lesson.

How many lessons will my child need?

This can vary. Some parents just want their child to to get an understanding of the basics and have some confidence before venturing into a skatepark. Most students 5 yrs and over are able to push and do tic tacs on their own within 1-3 lessons. Parents of super keen kids often bring their child to lessons on a weekly basis, so they continue building skills and confidence while enjoying the fun of skateboarding on a regular basis.

Do parents need to stay for the duration of the lesson?

We ask that parents stay for at least the first 5 minutes of their child’s lesson or the whole lesson if your child is under the age of 5 yrs. Otherwise, you are more than welcome to duck off / grab a coffee and come back toward the end of your child’s lesson.

Parents are most welcome to stay and watch, but encouraged not to distract skaters.

GROUP LESSONS

Do I need to make a booking or can I just show up on the day?

Yes, bookings are essential for all Skate Now lessons including our regular group lessons. To book your spot in our GROUP LESSONS, head to our BOOKING PAGE or send an email via our CONTACT PAGE

How can I stay updated on group lessons?

Check out the Skate Now Updates Page or follow us on FACEBOOK for updates on term start dates, location changes and rescheduling due to weather. You can also sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of our website page.

How large are the group sizes?

With regular group lessons we generally cap numbers at 15 and have 2 or more instructors running the class. This ensures each child has ample space to learn and we maintain good instructor-to-student ratios.

What happens if it rains?

Group lessons need to be rescheduled if it rains (we add an extra week when possible). A decision on rescheduling will be made by Skate Now at least 1 ½ hours prior to the start of a session. We will post updates regarding wet weather rescheduling on our FACEBOOK page.

My child has never ridden a skateboard is it OK for them to join a group lesson?

Absolutely, our beginner sessions are the perfect place for complete beginners aged 5 years and over to learn how to ride in a safe, supported environment.

Which session should I book my child in for?

Beginner sessions: For skaters who are just starting out, or have very limited skill with the basics (correct pushing, lean turning, tic tacs and stopping)

Advanced Beginner sessions: for skaters who have the basic skills and are ready to progress toward beginner level ramps and obstacles (fakies, roll-ins, acid drops, kickturns and drop-ins)

Intermediate sessions: skaters who have conquered the basics and entry level ramps and obstacles moves and are ready to gain skills and confidence with street tricks or in a skatepark environment (ollies, pop shuvits, kickflips and liptricks)

How long are the group lessons terms?

Regular group lesson terms go for 8-weeks. Term 4 2021 will only run for 7 weeks due to disruption from lockdowns.

Where can I park?

With the regular groups lessons at Redfern oval there is usually plenty of parking available on either Phillip St or Elizabeth St

I enrolled my child in a group lesson but unfortunately, they cannot participate anymore. Am I eligible for a refund?

We do not offer refunds for term enrolments but if you can let us know 48 hours prior to the term start date, we can reschedule your booking to a future date.

Can I get a refund or make-up class if my child is absent?

Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds, credits or make up classes.

Can I switch session times?

We do our best to accommodate changes in the first 2 weeks of term. This will come down to class availability and our program managers approval. Please CONTACT US if you have a request regarding the above

PARTIES

What locations do you run parties at?

We run a majority of our Skate Parties at Redfern oval, Heffron Park and Ultimo Public school, although it is possible to run parties at other venues, please CONTACT US if you have a specific location in mind or if you’re after suggestions for a suitable location in your area.

Note: Ultimo Public is a bookable wet weather location ($55 p/hr. booking fee applies).

How long do parties go for?

Our standard parties run for 2 hours

How are parties structured?

Getting Started: We start off with introductions and get the children to put on protective gear. We then run through a quick safety induction and move onto skill-based training and games on grass, concrete or our training boards (depending on the children’s age and ability levels). This segment of the party tends to go for around 45 minutes.

Middle: After a quick drink/snack break we then move onto the riding phase of the party which may involve basic flat ground riding, obstacle courses or ramps.

Winding up: Towards the end of the party we get the children to take off their protective equipment and help pack up the pads and helmets. At this stage coaches may run a demonstration or hand out skate stickers.

Does Skate Now offer catering for parties?

Skate Now does not provide catering for parties. However, we offer an optional portable BBQ as an add-on to our party package for an additional $50. Many parents find this option convenient and cost-effective for feeding a group of hungry skateboarding kids!

What happens if it rains?

With party bookings, we can either reschedule or offer a bookable undercover location at Ultimo Public School for an additional cost of $55 per hour. Arrangements for Ultimo Public need to be completed on or before the Friday morning prior to the party booking date.

Let us know if you have a suitable alternative wet weather location in mind and we will try our best to facilitate this.

My child is a complete shredder, but their friends have never ridden a skateboard before. Is this an issue?

It’s quite common for the birthday boy or girl to have more riding experience than their party guests. However, our Instructors are experienced at managing groups of children with varying experience and ability levels. Instructors are able to offer easier or more difficult modifications of the skills and games we run, and ensure everyone is riding at a level suitable to them. After the party your child may have a few more keen skate buddies to ride with!

SCHOOL AND OOSH

What are Skate Now incursions like?

We provide safe and fun skateboarding programs where kids get to have a blast doing something they love, in a supported environment. Our programs are accessible for a wide range of kids, and can be modified for the really young or less sporty. Our teaching methods are gradated for easy and safe progression, and include skate themed games such as skate limbo, skate slalom and fun training drills on practice boards.

Do Skate Now provide equipment?

Yes, we supply boards, premium protective gear and beginner to intermediate level skate obstacles at no extra cost for school and OOSH programs.  With standard programs we bring enough equipment for 15 participants, but larger group sizes are available upon request.

How long do the sessions go for?

Vacation Care: With our standard OOSH vacation care program we run consecutive 1-hour sessions with up to 15 children per session. Longer sessions available upon request.

School Sport and Aftercare: Standard session times vary from 45-minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the needs of your organisation.

For enquires about longer session times and other options please use the enquiry form at the bottom of our School and OOSH Programs page.

Can you provide compliance documents such as WWCC?

Yes! We can provide WWCCs compliance, COVID Safety plans etc.

What kind of space do you need to run an incursion?

We just need an area of relatively flat, smooth concrete such as a tennis or basketball court. Alternatively, we can run fun and engaging skill-based lessons for beginner to intermediate riders on playground rubber or artificial turf.
