BACKLIGHT IN THE GRAIN | Angels of Skateboarding
By Aaron Brown
BACKLIGHT IN THE GRAIN Angels of Skateboarding is a black and white photography book principally about skateboarding in Australia in the late 1990s. The subjects depicted, eternalised by silver halides embedded in the grain structure of film are Angels of skateboarding.
An introductory essay discusses the trajectory of skateboarding from late 1970s through to the early 1990s, when the focus shifted from vertical ramp riding to street skateboarding; hence giving rise to a unique urban culture.
The book features more than 120 black and white skateboarding stills, portraits and documentary photographs – with a particular emphasis placed on street skateboarding. The majority of the images are taken in the late 1990s, with some more recent pictures taken between 2014 and 2019.
